Help Desk: Live Update Error #438?

There may be a message when the form opens that "There is no object in this control."

When the Live Update Form opens there may be a white rectangle near the top of the form. Clicking on the white spot raises a message "because of your security settings and current security policy, this control is disabled."

When you start the Live Update process, it logs into the server and reports that an update is available. You acknowledge the update and just as it is about to start a download "ERROR 438" occurs .

After you acknowledge the error message, Live Update hangs.

On December 9, 2008 Microsoft issued a critical security update that broke the Live Update Form. More on the the subject at this link: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms08-070.mspx The affected file is mscomct2.ocx (Microsoft Common Controls No. 2). Version 6.0.88.4 March 14, 2000. Microsoft has issued a new version of the control Version 6.1.98.12 October 10, 2008. Access disables version 6.0.88.4 when it is used on a form. The new version of the mscomct2.ocx was obtained from this link: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=E27EEBCB-095D-43EC-A19E-4A46E591715C&displaylang=en The individual ocx file was extracted from the msi pack.

To resolve this issue you will need to download and install a patch from this location: ftp://www.dvd-register.com/DVDR_Patch_022809.exe

This is an Install Shield installer that will replace the older non-functional version of the mscomct2.ocx with the newer MS provided version. To use the patch:

1. Close the DVD Register.

2. Save the file to a know location on your PC such as a temporary folder in My Documents and then right click the file and select Open. You can also double click on the file. If you are running Windows Vista, then User Account Control (UAC) will ask your permission to run the installed and will indicate it is not from a known source. On Windows XP, you will be aksed if you want to run the program from an unknown publisher. You should run the program to install the patch.

3. When the installation is complete, you can reopen the DVD Register and restart Live Update. If the patch worked them the Error 438 should not occur.
