Help Desk: The operating system is not presently configured to run this application?
Help Desk: The application encountered unexpected error #13 with message string 'type mismatch'?

This issue occurs when you have installed a new version of the DVD Register software and you attempt to opened it for the first time.

The universal installer for the DVD Register searches your system disk for a version of Microsoft Access (MSACCESS.EXE). It uses the first version of Access that it finds. This works well when there is only one version of Access that is installed on your computer. However when more than one version is installed the first choice can be a bad choice. Most of the time when you install Access, the prior versions are removed. Multiple versions can exist if the prior version were not removed or there are run time and retail versions that have been installed. Typically when a new version of Access is installed on a PC, then the older version become broken and will not run properly. This setup issue occurs when the installer selects a version of Access that is not working on your PC. Use the procedure described below to resolve this issue:

1. You first need to determine the versions of Access that are installed on your PC. Open Start>Programs>Accessories>Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer). When Windows Explorer opens, click on the Search tool bar button as shown below. Then adjust the value of the "Look in:" so that the search will be done in your system disk. In most typical situations, you system disc will be the C: Drive. If you have a PC with multiple hard drives or partitions, then you may need to select another partition or drive that you use to boot your PC. Enter the file name "MSACCESS.EXE " into the "all or part of the file name:" field. Then click the "Search" command button.

2. Once the search has been completed the results of the search will be shown in the right hand window. Your results will be different. You are not concerned about any copies of the file that are located in the "Prefetch" folder or may be shown as inside a ZIP or other type of compressed archive. You are interested in copies that are located in the "Program Files Folder". When you hover over the file name it details will become visible in a pop-up.

3. Hover over each candidate to view the file properties and version number. You will want to write down the folder location of the most recent version. In the example shown below the latest version is Access 2000 located in "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office 2000\Office" The major release version number are the digits to the left of the first decimal point. Access 97 is known as Version 8. Access 2000 is known as Version 9. Access XP (aka 2002) is known as Version 10. Access 2003 is known as Version 11. As an alternative, you can right click the file and the left click the "Properties" shortcut command. Then select the Version Tab.

4. Now that you have located the most recent version of Access yo need to make an edit to the shortcut that launches the DVD Register. You will find the shortcut on your Desktop. Right click the shortcut and select "Properties" with the left click as shown below:

5. You need to make a change in the "Target" field of the properties form as shown below:

6. You will not be able to see the entire target because it is too long to be visible all at once. Click on the field and then use the left and right arrow keys on the keyboard to navigate with-in the target. You can also use the Home key to select the start of the target or the End key to move to the end of the target. The target will generally follow the format below:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office 2000\Office\MSACCESS.EXE" /User laseruse /wrkgrp "C:\Program Files\Laser Disc Register\Release 1.23.6 A200x\laser.mdw" "C:\Program Files\Laser Disc Register\Release 1.23.6 A200x\DVDReg.mdb"

The highlighted portion of the target is the part that selects the version of Access to launch when you start-up the DVD Register application. You will need to edit this value so that you update the highlighted potion with the folder location that you wrote down in Step 3. For example if Access 2003 was installed on your PC then the shortcut would be:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11\MSACCESS.EXE" /User laseruse /wrkgrp "C:\Program Files\Laser Disc Register\Release 1.23.6 A200x\laser.mdw" "C:\Program Files\Laser Disc Register\Release 1.23.6 A200x\DVDReg.mdb"

Be advised that your you must use the folder that is actually shown in Step 3. Neither of the examples shown above will necessarily work on your PC. Once you have made the edit then click the "Apply" command button and then Click the "OK" command button.

HINT: I find it convenient to open a notepad or wordpad window to facilitate edits to the target string. I copy the existing target string into the open notepad window, make the edits in Notepad, and then paste the corrected target string back into the properties form. When the target string is copies to Notepad it is possible to see the entire string without scrolling.

7. You can test the edit that you just made by rights clicking the shortcut and selecting the "Open" command. If the DVD Register open without error the the issue is resolved. If there is an error, then you may need to try another folder location until you find one that points to a working version of Access.
